Medical Assisting

There is no better time than the present to enter the healthcare field.  The Medical Assisting program is a great way to gain access to this exciting profession.  Recently, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) have decided credentialed medical assistants can enter orders into patient medical records for the computerized provider order entry (CPOE) – a task previously limited to licensed healthcare professionals.  This means that the medical assistant students who become credentialed can offer additional workflow efficiency and compliance benefits to their employers. The Medical Assisting curriculum prepares students to perform administrative, clinical and laboratory procedures for employment in a physician’s office, clinic, or hospital.

Our Medical Assisting goal is “To prepare competent entry-level medical assistants in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains.”  The course will cover, but is not limited to the following:

·       Anatomy & Physiology
·       Entry level clinical skills
·       Phlebotomy certification
·       Scheduling appointments
·       Records management/electronic medical records
·       Medical law & ethics
·       Billing & Coding
·       American Heart BLS Heathcare Provider CPR
·       First Aid/emergencies
·       Computer skills
·       Psychology
·       Employability skills
·       OSHA/universal precautions
·       HIPAA standards and guidelines

Students are eligible to take the Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) examination offered through the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) and Phlebotomy certification offered through National Healthcare Association which is included in tuition costs. PLCC Medical Assisting Job Placement Rate: 76.92% and Graduation Rate: 75%  (based on 5 year average between 2010 – 2014).  Portage Lakes Career Center Medical Assisting Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs ( upon the recommendation of Medical Assisting Education Review Board (MAERB).   Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Program, 1361 Park Street, Clearwater FL 33756, 727-210-2350.  Class size limited to 20 students.
