A Federal Grant that can provide an eligible student with monies that can be applied to the cost of tuition, fees, books, and equipment. Students enrolled in a program of at least 900 clock hours in length can receive a Federal PELL Grant of up to $6345 per year. Students enrolled in 600 clock hour programs can receive a PELL award of up to $4230, respectively. Because this is a grant program, these monies are not repaid by the student. To remain eligible for Pell Grant funds, a full-time student must maintain satisfactory academic progress (80% minimum) in addition to a minimum of 90% attendance. Students not in compliance with the attendance policy will be responsible for paying any financial aid expected to be received from the U.S. Department of Education.
This program allows eligible students to borrow money at a low rate of interest from the federal government. Monies borrowed from this program must be repaid. Repayment of the loan begins six months after the student graduates or withdraws from the Career Center. Current interest rate is 2.75% for subsidized and unsubsidized student loans.
Subsidized/Unsubsidized
1. Complete the 2024-2025 FAFSA at www.fafsa.ed.gov
(the FAFSA for the 2024-2025 school year is projected to open in December of 2023)
2. Go to www.studentloans.gov
a. Sign in with your FAFSA User ID
b. Read the information provided regarding the loan process, interest rates, and repayment plans
c. Complete “Entrance Counseling” before the first disbursement
d. Complete and submit the “Master Promissory Note (MPN) for Subsidized or Unsubsidized.
e. Contact Kim Robinson at 330.896.8123 to have your loan certified for the amount you want to borrow
4. Go to www.studentloans.gov to complete “Exit Counseling” before the last loan disbursement
The Direct Student Loan will be disbursed to the school in a minimum of two separate payments from the U.S. Department of Education. Typically one half of the loan will be disbursed in the fall and one half will be disbursed in the spring, depending on the class start date.
The school adheres to the policies and procedures set by the U.S. Department of Education, The Auditor of the State of Ohio, and the Portage Lakes Career Center Treasurer’s Office for all disbursements. Loan funds will be first applied toward tuition costs. Any balance of funds will be refunded to the student.
Students will be notified when refund checks are available.
PLCC offers a $1000 discount to Veterans enrolled in a full-time program. Additional assistance can be obtained through the Veterans Education Benefits. Interested students should contact the Financial Aid Office for application assistance.
This funding can provide assistance to unemployed and low income students. Call your local “one stop” office for information.
The Bureau of Vocational Rehabilitation (BVR) provides individuals with disabilities services and supports necessary to help them attain and maintain employment. To learn more visit the BVR website at www.ood.ohio.gov.
What is Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) how do I file?
The Trade Act program provides a variety of re-employment services and income support to assist individuals who have become either unemployed or had hours reduced as a result of increased imports from, or shifts in production to, foreign countries. TAA services may be expanded to secondary workers of businesses or suppliers to the primary company, firm, or petitioning workers who filed the TAA petition.
