Portage Lakes Career Center Partnered in Straight A Fund

Portage Lakes Career Center (PLCC), a career and technical school for both high school students and adult learners, has received $1.5 million through Ohio’s Straight A Fund.  This grant will allow PLCC to partner with eight other career centers to expand and continue the vision of RAMTEC (Robotics & Advanced Manufacturing Technology Education Collaborative) by providing high school and adult students with advanced manufacturing and engineering skills.

The awards were announced Friday, June 20, 2014 by the Straight A Fund Governing Board. Thirty-seven grants were awarded to partnerships from around the state of Ohio in the second round of Governor John Kasich’s Straight A Fund, part of a $1.6 billion increase in state funding for education over the two year budget cycle. The fund was created to promote innovative local ideas and programs to help transform and modernize Ohio’s education system.

“We are thrilled to be part of this recent grant,” said Superintendent Ben Moore. “Partnering in this project will continue PLCC’s mission of developing life-long learners with the skills, expertise and knowledge needed for career and college success.”

The RAMTEC Statewide Advanced Manufacturing STEM/Career Technical Education Consortium received a total of $14.99 million through Ohio’s Straight A Fund. This grant will allow PLCC and eight additional career centers to expand and continue the vision of RAMTEC first started at Tri-Rivers Career Center. PLCC will receive an estimated $1.5 million of the $14.99 million grant to develop a Robotics and Advanced Manufacturing program designed to meet the needs of employers in Northeast Ohio.
