Brief Posting Description:
The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (GCRTA) located in Cleveland, Ohio, is searching for an entry-level Mechanic within the Operations Division.


Detailed Description:
DUTIES: Repairs buses, Paratransit vehicles, non-revenue vehicles, and associated equipment. The incumbent in the 442 position is directly responsible for all repairs and works independently as required. Performs one or more of the following functions: Engine Diagnosis, Engine Replacement, Engine and Small Parts Rebuilding, Transmission Replacement, Differential Replacement and/or Rebuild, Brake, Front End, Suspension/Steering Work, Transmission Rebuilding, General Maintenance. The incumbent in this position can be assigned to any of these duties according to need and can be reassigned to a different functional area at any time. Performs other duties of a similar nature as may be required.


Job Requirements:
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Qualified candidates must have a High School Diploma. Completion of a high school or post-high school Automotive/Diesel Technology or related program (as evidenced by diploma, degree, certificate, etc.) is also required. To substitute for completion of an Automotive/Diesel Technology program, two (2) years of verifiable experience in an automotive or truck shop maintaining and repairing vehicle systems (e.g., engines, transmissions, brakes, and steering and suspension) or an ASE certification will be considered. Applicants must have a valid Ohio Driver’s License with no more than FOUR (4) points in the past THREE (3) years.


Applicants who successfully pass the selection process who do not have a temporary or permanent CDL may be offered the position, contingent on obtaining the temporary/permanent CDL. RTA will provide the necessary training to facilitate the employee obtaining their CDL. A CDL with air brake and passenger endorsement is a requirement for continued employment with RTA.


Successful candidates will be expected to pass a background check and post-offer physical that is job-related and consistent with business necessity.


Candidates selected to participate in the hiring process have to successfully pass a written/online exam, performance test, and interview. Candidates must pass the online assessment and receive a minimum of 70% or higher on the performance test, and a minimum of 60% or higher on the interview to move forward in the process. Weights for a final score will be assigned as follows for internal candidates: Online Test, 42.5%/Performance test 42.5%, Record Evaluation 15%. For external candidates, weights for a final score are Online Test, 50%/Performance Test, 50%. All candidates must score a minimum composite score of 70% to establish eligibility for the portion.


Internal candidates must meet all record evaluation criteria to gain the 15% weighting. Records evaluation information includes a review of the following:

• 5 or more absence occurrences

• 2 or more AWOL or absence control suspensions

• 3 or more active written reminders (regardless of the level)

• 5 or more misses (regardless of whether they are active or not active)

• 4 or more active tardies

• Drug or alcohol suspension

• Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) suspension

• Active Decision-Making Leave (DML)

Additional Information: The performance of these duties may be required at any time of the day or night, any day and night of the week. The position is a bargaining unit position.
