Starting hourly rate could be as high as $25.41 depending on experience, plus an extra $.50/hour if possess a CDL.
Salary range: $21.26 – $27.98

Job Description
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Removes and installs complete diesel and gasoline-powered engines, clutches, automatic and standard transmission, and/or all other component parts; does related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: Requires a thorough knowledge of auto repair in order to perform the duties of a heavy-duty automotive mechanic; may exercise supervision over other automotive mechanics; must be in excellent physical condition.
EXAMPLES OF WORK: Diagnoses all mechanical and operating difficulties of vehicles; repairs defects; replaces worn or broken parts; makes proper adjustments to maintain the vehicles in proper operating condition; repairs and/or replaces all electrical equipment such as generators, starters, replace or repair hydraulic systems including pumps, valves and cylinders, wiring for all systems that make the vehicle operate properly; conducts road tests of vehicles after repairs noting performance of engine, automatic transmissions, brakes and all other component parts, with the repairs and safety factors checked to satisfaction; operates standard testing equipment used in modern garages; removes, disassembles, reassembles and install entire engines; rear-end assemblies and brake systems; straightens and welds broken parts when required; makes road calls for emergency repairs; makes necessary and required inspections.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: As a heavy-duty auto mechanic, they must be able to repair all types of equipment owned and operated by the City of Canton; shall have a thorough knowledge of trucks, loaders, pumps, street sweepers, and all types of heavy duty and automotive equipment and must be able to perform all the duties required of a heavy-duty automotive repairman; must be in excellent physical condition. Must be proficient in the use of state-of-the-art tools.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: A Heavy Equipment Mechanic must have (3 years) working experience as a heavy-duty equipment and truck mechanic with a background in diesel and hydraulics; graduation from high school; have tools of his trade; any equivalent combination of experience and training providing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must be willing to attend training schools when requested to do so.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Must possess a valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License, within two (2) years of the date of hire. Must remain up to date with new developments in the automotive repair field.

RATING

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO VETERANS

A member in good standing of a reserve component of the armed forces of the United States, including the Ohio National Guard, who successfully completes the member’s initial entry-level training shall receive a credit of fifteen percent (15%) of the person’s total grade given in the examination in which the person receives a passing grade.
