POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The Set-Up/Welder will interpret blueprints and work orders to weld and assemble metal transportation and utility structures.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Perform welding set-up and/or assembly tasks as directed under the direction of the immediate supervisor
Identify and adhere to the appropriate Weld Procedure for the task at hand
Provide quality welds that meet welding procedures specifications and are approved by the Quality Control Inspector. This includes, but is not limited to, proper weld size, weld profile, cleaning, preheating, etc.
Complete any relevant specific job duties as required by immediate supervisor
Install and confirm temporary bracing is needed to avoid distortion and remove bracing when complete
Operate punches, grinders, drills, saws, oxy-fuel torches, plasma cutters, and other basic equipment and other hand tools
Move and/or organize material as needed to support production tasks which may include the operation of jib and/or overhead cranes as required
Maintain a clean and orderly workstation
Assess blueprints, drawings, and specifications to establish work requirements accordance with job folder including but not limited to identifying components, understanding dimensions, weld requirements, assembly sequence, checking tolerances, tapping holes, and any inspection points
Organize work orders, and prepare accurate reports regarding tools, equipment, and materials daily
Conduct exact measurements, layout, and fitting tasks per drawings/diagrams in accordance with UMIC procedures
Provide visual quality assurance in line with UMIC QC requirements
Complete any relevant specific job duties as required by immediate supervision.
Cut, drill, bevel and grind subparts as required to perform a quality finished product
Perform welding prep (grinding, beveling, etc.) as required
REQUIRED SKILLS / ATTITUDES:
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Knowledge of basic shop mathematics
Strong ability to read and understand blueprints, shop drawings and welding symbols
Proficient in effective operation of welding equipment
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High School diploma/GED equivalent
Valid driver’s license
1-2 years’ experience with processes of SMAW and/or GMAW
Experience in heavy structural fabrication
Must pass a blueprint test, fitter and welding test as part of the application process
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to stand for long periods of time.
Ability to occasionally pull, push, carry, or lift tools, equipment, or materials 50 lbs. or less
Ability to withstand occasional bending, squatting, or crouching
Ability to frequently handle (hold, seize, grasp, turn, etc.) tools, equipment, or material
Ability to work in inclement weather conditions, including cold, heat, and humidity
Adhere to all Safety Policies and Procedures, including, but not limited, to proper PPE, and Daily Equipment Inspections (welding equipment and tools)
