What You Will Learn
During the first year of the program, students will engage in job training activities within the Portage Lakes Career Center facility. They will work to develop basic skills in housekeeping, laundry operations, dietary care, grounds-keeping, customer service, retail services, and basic food preparations. During the second year in the program, students will continue to develop their employability and independent living skills through specific transition services and instruction in the classroom for 2 day of the week. The remaining 3 days of the week, students will be transported to work sites to apply their skills in a supported environment for up to 2 hours a day.
The program is designed to provide a high level of support to a maximum of 12 students each year. This provides a lower student to support personnel ratio and more opportunities for individualized instruction and reinforcement.
During the first year of the program, students will be supported by their classroom instructor and a classroom aide.
During their second year in the program, students will be supported by their classroom instructor, a classroom aide, as well as designated job site mentors who will work closely with the students to further develop their skills and success in a real-world work environment.

Meet the Teacher: Dale Dunlevy
I’ve enjoyed being a career tech instructor at Portage Lakes Career Center (PLCC) for past 4 years. Prior to teaching at PLCC, I served 6 years in the US Navy, and worked new construction plumbing, HVAC and electrical work for 10 years as a self-employed contractor. After that, I worked for PLCC doing maintenance of the equipment and facilities for several years. I’ve been married for almost 20 years and have 3 children. In my spare time, I enjoy going to my kid’s activities, working around my home and golfing.
